Huntington Beach Schools Remain Closed As Expert Confirms Classroom Tested Positive For Asbestos

HUNTINGTON BEACH (CBSLA.com) — Eleven Huntington Beach schools will remain closed for at least another week after an expert confirmed Tuesday a classroom tested positive for asbestos.

Parents packed a meeting with Ocean View School District officials Tuesday evening as district-appointed expert Kerry Rubin confirmed a wipe sample came back positive for the carcinogenic dust at Hope View Elementary.

Officials said every room in the 11-school district was tested and all will remain closed as testing and clean-up continues.

Many parents began taking their children out of Hope View and Oak View elementary schools on Friday after a complaint was filed last week.

Both schools were closed Monday and Tuesday following asbestos removal Saturday.

Several parents addressed district officials, unsure of when classes could safely resume.

"You have you taken the safety and the welfare of my child and decided that I did not have a say in it and you put them at risk. How dare you," parent Ryan Summerville said.

Parents are also asking for the assistant superintendent of the district to step down.

"We love our kids. You don't," parent Michelle Morales told officials during the district meeting. "Our kids are a dollar in your paycheck."

Officials could not immediately say when testing and clean-up would be completed.
