Hundreds Of Families Attend Clippers' "Feed The Community" Event

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — The Los Angeles Clippers teamed up with the Salvation Army in South Central to provide hundreds of families with boxes of food and other essential personal care items.

The line wrapped around the block as families from across Los Angeles braved the heat to get a little help today.

"I just wanna say thank you so much," Latoya Pierce said.

The Pierce's are just one of the 1200 families who showed to to the Salvation Army Siemon Family Youth and Community Center on Saturday.

"It really means a lot, it makes my heart whole because I don't have a family," Pierce added.

The Salvation Army wasn't the only organization helping families out on Saturday, as they got a much needed assist from the Los Angeles Clippers and U.S. Military.

"It's really cool to give back," Clippers center DeAndre Jordan said.

"Coming from a single parent home, and I had 3 younger brothers, so it was tough at times, and I see my family in a lot of these families coming in," he added.

Every family who attended was given several boxes full of food and toiletries.

In addition to these boxes, every family was given a bundle of Avon makeup to make moms feel special as well.

"All I do is take care of my daughter, so I let myself go to make sure she's fine and that Avon stuff really helps me," Latoya Pierce added.

Sargeant Anita Tillery of the U.S. Army said of the event, "It reminds me that none of us can take anything for granted."
