Police Rescue Baby Held Hostage By Father After 7-Hour Standoff, Officer-Involved Shooting

COVINA (CBSLA) — A seven-month-old child was rescued by police Sunday following a nearly seven-hour stand-off with the child's father.

The suspect barricaded himself inside a vehicle at the entrance of Kalher Russell Park just off of Glendora Ave. after he was pulled over due to suspicious driving behavior around 2 p.m., according to Covina police.

Authorities confirmed to CBS2/KCAL9 the suspect and was in the vehicle with his seven-month-old daughter, who was in the backseat. The child's mother, who was also in the vehicle, was talked out of the car after a verbal altercation with the suspect, police said.

The suspect, described as a 22-year-old parolee from Covina, allegedly brandished a knife and was making suicidal threats.

After nearly seven hours, an officer-involved shooting occurred.

CBS2/KCAL9's Brittney Hopper reports the suspect was shot. The baby was handed over to paramedics and was reported safe.

The condition of the suspect was unknown at the time of this report.
