Horrific crash involving at least 13 vehicles in South LA caught on cam
A suspected DUI driver behind the wheel of a speeding tow truck crashed into at least 13 vehicles in South LA Friday morning and it was all was caught on camera.
The collision happened around 2:45 a.m. when the out of control truck sped through the intersection of Griffith Ave and Washington Blvd, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.
Authorities said the tow truck hit two cars at the intersection before plowing into multiple other parked cars on the street.
Within seconds of coming to a stop, the truck burst in to flames.
"We saw the car was in flames and it was leaking," said Adamary Solorio, who lives on the street where the violent crash occurred. "He said to run because it might explode and we got really nervous, we got scared."
Video footage showed debris all over the road way with at least 13 vehicles heavily damaged. Griffith Ave was closed for about 5 hours while crews cleaned up the wreckage from the crash.
The force of the impact caused one car to fly into a nearby home, trapping Nelly Sorio and her son inside of their apartment and preventing her from going to work or taking him to school.
"My son and I were unable to exit our apartment," she said. "We had to go out of our apartment through the window."
She says that she called the tow truck company and learned that the driver, who had only been working with them for about a month, was not insured.
"Now that we're hearing that the insurance is practically non-existent on that tow truck we are up in the air," she said. "That's my biggest concern now."
Authorities arrested the driver for driving under the influence.
