Hopeful Lottery Players Line Up For Powerball Tickets Ahead Of Record Drawing

UPDATE: Winning Numbers Picked Saturday -- 16, 19, 32, 34, 57  and Powerball 13

HAWTHORNE (CBSLA.com) — Long lines and high hopes were spreading in Hawthorne Saturday morning ahead of an 8 p.m. drawing for a record $900 million Powerball jackpot.

California Lottery officials say the winner could take home a lump-sum payment of $496 million. The retailer selling a single winning ticket would receive a $1 million bonus.

On Saturday morning, long lines formed outside of Blue Bird Liquor in Hawthorne. Some lottery hopefuls lined up as early as 4 a.m., three hours before the store opened.

The previous Powerball jackpot record was $590.5 million, which was claimed by a single winner in Florida in May 2013. Two lucky Powerball players split a $587.5 million jackpot in November 2012.

The last California Powerball winner was in February 2014, claiming $425.3 million, according to the lottery.

For Wednesday's drawing, several tickets were sold with five numbers, but missing the Powerball number, including one in California. The ticket sold at Perry's Liquor in Union City is worth $1,414,967, California Lottery officials announced.

The numbers drawn Wednesday night were 2, 11, 47, 62, 63 and the Powerball number was 17. The estimated jackpot was $500 million.

The drawing was the 18th since the last time a ticket with all six numbers was sold.

The odds of matching all five numbers and the Powerball number is roughly 1 in 293 million, according to the Powerball website. The overall chance of winning a prize is 1 in 24.87.

The Powerball game is played in 44 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and U.S. Virgin Islands.

If there is no Powerball winner on Saturday, the jackpot will likely skyrocket to $1.3 billion.
