Homes temporarily evacuated after armed suspect barricades in Whittier neighborhood

Armed suspect barricaded inside of Whittier home

A group of homes in Whittier were evacuated on Sunday evening when an allegedly armed suspect barricaded themselves from Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department deputies. 

The incident began at around 5:15 p.m. in the 5800 block of Juarez Avenue, according to a statement from the department. 

Circumstances preceding the standoff remain unclear, but deputies said that the man was possibly armed, prompting them to call the department's Special Enforcement Bureau and the Crisis Negotiation Team to the scene. 

In order to keep residents safe, deputies evacuated a homes in the surrounding area. 

At around 10:15 p.m., they reported that the suspect had been detained without further incident.
