Homeowners Ditch Lawns To Conserve Water Amid State's Mega-Drought
VAN NUYS (CBSLA.com) — A landscaping company is taking advantage of a government rebate and transforming lawns to water-efficient alternatives.
Turf Terminators tear up grass and replace it with rock, gravel and drought-resistant plants.
It's a grassroots — no pun intended — effort to help Southland homeowners go "green" as the state finds itself in a fourth year of a mega-drought.
Turf Terminators spent a couple of hours Thursday converting the front lawn of Georgina Cox's Van Nuys home.
"They contact DWP, they get the rebate, and they just come in and do it all," Cox said. "For someone lazy like me, it's really wonderful."
"We recycle, we do all of that. So, this is going to be so much better without having to worry about messing up the planet," Cox's daughter Bronte said.
They expect their new landscaping will lower their monthly water bill to $25 to $30. They will also receive a rebate.
The crew was scheduled to work on five more yards along Mammoth Drive that day and expect many more homeowners will jump on the offer.
