Hikers Injured In Reported Avalanche On Mount Baldy

MT BALDY (CBSLA.com/AP) — Authorities Thursday rescued three hikers on Mount Baldy following an avalanche.

The slide was reported at 12:13 Thursday at the Baldy Bowl located southeast of the mountain's peak. One of the hikers slid down and suffered "serious" injuries, according to San Bernardino County Fire officials.

At least two of the hikers were treated for unspecified injuries, authorities said.

Fire officials said in a Twitter post that the hikers were stuck halfway down the Mount Baldy Bowl trail.

Mount Baldy rises to 10,064 feet in the San Gabriel Mountains.

KCAL9's Crystal Cruz spoke to Louis Wojciechowski, one of the hikers about his ordeal.

He is out of the hospital with a few stitches and torn pants.

"Chris was like 'Avalanche!' and the next thing you know we were all just hit by this snow and just spun in different directions," said Wojciechowski. "And then I got buried a bit but I was able to pop up. And then I just slid down the mountain. I didn't think I was going to stop. I finally stopped and I thought I was going to die. I was glad to be okay."
