High-Speed Chase Ends With Carjacking Suspect Crashing Into Pole

POMONA (CBSLA.com) — A carjacking suspect led Inland Empire police on a high-speed chase Sunday on surface streets and freeways before crashing into a utility pole in Ontario.

The incident began in Pomona when police received a call at 8:25 a.m. from a man who said he was assaulted and then carjacked. He offered a detailed description of the man who allegedly made off with his 2010 Nissan sedan.

Law enforcement agencies nearby were alerted to be on the lookout and police officers in Claremont spotted the stolen Nissan heading east on San Jose Avenue, according to a police report.

Officers initiated a traffic stop but the suspect sped off, turning south on Indian Hill Boulevard and got on the eastbound 10 Freeway, where he picked up to speeds of more than 100 mph.

The suspect exited the 10 Freeway at Fourth Street in Ontario and headed east, topping 80 mph on surface streets until he crashed into a utility pole and fence in an industrial area.

The vehicle flipped over and the suspect was trapped for a short time.

Paramedics rushed him to an area hospital, where he was accompanied by Pomona police.

Authorities have not released the suspect's name. They say he will be jailed on suspicion of carjacking and potentially other crimes.
