Head-on crash kills SUV driver in Chatsworth traffic

One person was killed in a two-car crash in Winnetka Thursday morning.

The crash occurred just after 6 a.m. at the intersection of Nordhoff Street and Winnetka Avenue. A security camera captured the terrifying moment when a black Tesla making a left turn at the intersection collided with a white Honda

The head-on crash sent the Honda into the yard of a house on the corner. The 20-year-old behind the wheel was trapped inside the vehicle in the yard. Firefighters extricated him, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Tesla's driver sustained minor injuries.

People who live and work in the area said cars often speed through the intersection and go against the signal.

"There's a lot of people who are speeding," said neighbor Jose de la Cruz, who was in a collision at the same intersection. "I also have an accident there... The guy ran away. That was like 8 months ago.

This is the same intersection where a crash in April 2021 killed University of Kentucky Basketball player and NBA prospect Terrence Clarke.

Clarke was driving down the same thoroughfare at a high rate of speed when ran a red light, hit another car before hitting a pole and brick wall in Winnetka.

Neighbors said it's the responsibility of both law enforcement and drivers to make sure the roads stay safe.

"Everybody has to be mindful," neighbor Henry Martinez said. "We're all rushing to get to work. So, we just have to take our time. Be a little more patient."

Police are looking to see if speed was a factor.
