Hawthorne: NB I-405 closed for hours after CHP officers shoot man allegedly throwing bricks

Shooting investigation creates traffic nightmare on I-405 in Hawthorne

All northbound lanes of the I-405 were closed for hours after CHP officers were reportedly involved in a shooting just before 7:30 p.m. Thursday in Hawthorne.

According to California Highway Patrol, officers were dispatched to the Rosecrans Boulevard on-ramp at around 7:15 p.m. after receiving reports of a brushfire in the area.

At some point after their arrival, a shooting occurred. Officers allege that a suspect was throwing bricks in their direction before shots were fired.

"Upon arrival, the officer observed a fire at a homeless encampment along a freeway embankment," said a statement from CHP. "While the officer on scene investigated matters pertaining to the fire, he was approached by a combative male adult subject."

The unidentified suspect's condition was not immediately known, though Los Angeles County Fire Department paramedics were called to the scene for someone suffering from a gunshot wound. He was reportedly conscious and alert while he was taken to a nearby hospital. His injuries were listed as non-life-threatening.

No CHP officers were injured.

All lanes of the I-405 between Inglewood Avenue and Rosecrans Avenue were reopened by 11:30 p.m.
