Guide To The Hauser Wirth & Schimmel Gallery
Located in a beautifully restored former flour factory once known as Globe Mills, Hauser, Wirth & Schimmel is a branch of an international contemporary art gallery that features museum quality art. At 100,000-square-feet, the exhibition space is as beautiful as it is large. Located in the heart of DTLA's arts district, it's one of the most worthy attractions for art lovers and enthusiasts alike.

Historical Significance
Founded in 1992 by Manuela Wirth and her mother Ursula Hauser, The Hauser Wirth & Schimmel Gallery also offers locations in Zurich, London, New York, and Somerset, and now in Los Angeles. As the 6th location, it is a true family business. Iwan Wirth describes the LA gallery as a "way to seek to connect art through community, conservation, and discoveries." Paul Schimmel adds "We want to expand the notion of what a gallery can be and it's relationship to the artist. It's our certainty that people will come from all over the world."
Galleries
Co-curating the opening exhibition along with Schimmel, Jenni Sorkin notes that the the gallery itself is broken into four different spaces, with the east and west wings separated from the north and south exhibit spaces by the open courtyard.
Opening Exhibition
The opening exhibition, on view through September 4th, 2016, presents a survey of distinctly under-represented sculpture by women ranging from the 1940s through present, Revolution in the Making: Abstract Sculpture by Women, 1947-2016. Admission is free to this spectacular exhibition.
Some startlingly beautiful pieces are displayed, including the work of French sculptor Louise Bourgeois, Tokyo based Yayori Kusama, and Eva Hesse. Many are seminal pieces which would appeal to serious collectors; others, as in a museum collection, are on loan, and not available for purchase.
Visitors should start with the north gallery and head through the courtyard to visit other galleries, traveling chronologically through the quite wonderful world of female sculptors.
Overall, the complex offers museum-quality - and size - exhibition space. The cultural institution that Hauser, Wirth, & Schimmel represents, as well as Schimmel's deep ties to the LA art community, means a vibrant new venue has opened in the City of Angels.
On exhibit at this 100,000 square foot exhibition space are pieces of art from artists and collections including:
- Rita Ackermann
- Anna Maria Maiolino
- The Estate of Eva Hesse
- Paul McCarthy

Shops and Dining
Along with the gallery spaces themselves, the complex includes a significant bookstore, ARTBOOK, and opening in the summer months of 2016, a restaurant, Manuela, featuring locally-sourced ingredients.
Open Space
Another appealing part of the complex is the open space at The Hauser Wirth & Schimmel Gallery. With sprawling and beautiful public gardens, a passageway leading between 2nd and 3rd streets, and an open courtyard area that links gallery wings and houses sculpture, the space is nothing short of spectacular.
