Police: Garden Grove Man, 40, Critical After Attempted Murder, Suicide

GARDEN GROVE (CBSLA.com)  —  Authorities in Garden Grove say a 40-year-old man tried to kill his wife and himself Wednesday morning.

Officers were dispatched to the 12200 block of Pearce Avenue around 1:35 a.m. Wednesday.

Inside a garage, officials found a man with a gunshot wound to the stomach and a .22 caliber Ruger rifle nearby.

After securing the weapon, authorities rendered first aid.

Fermin Soto was transported to UCI Medical Center, where he is listed in critical condition.

Authorities said Soto was discussing his marriage with his wife when he said he was going to kill himself. She said he raised the rifle to his head but they struggled for the weapon and one round went off in the ceiling of their home.

The man's wife said she ran and he fired a round in her direction but missed. He then turned the gun on himself and shot himself once in the stomach.

Police said the couple's two teenage daughters were home at the time of the shooting. The children were not involved in the altercation or injured, authorities said.

Authorities withheld the wife and children's names citing a victim's confidentiality laws.
