Friends Of Girl Killed By Suspected Wrong-Way Driver Raise Funds For Funeral Expenses
SAN PEDRO (CBSLA.com) — A group of Southland students spent the weekend raising funds for the family of a classmate who was killed by a suspected wrong-way driver.
The teens held a car wash on Sunday after their 17-year-old classmate at Port of Los Angeles High School, Sarah Banuelos, was killed in a crash 10 days ago.
"Just to help her family, you know? They must be going through a very hard time," said Malia Street, a friend of the victim's.
Friends say Banuelos was a passenger in a vehicle driving back from Disneyland when a suspected wrong-way driver slammed into the vehicle she was riding in on the 91 Freeway.
Banuelos died at the scene.
"She's just very beautiful and she had a beautiful soul. It's just very sad to lose someone like her," Sweet said. "She'll live in our hearts forever."
"She was always there for me, so like now it's my job to be there for her," Brandon Herera, another friend of the victim's, said.
The car wash was among several fundraisers held in memory of Banuelos with funds going to assist her family with funeral expenses.
"We are selling wristbands. We sold shirts at school. Really we did everything we could to help her family out," Herera said.
