Fireworks To Be Sold During Cheerleading Squad's Fundraiser Stolen In Huntington Beach
HUNTINGTON BEACH (CBSLA.com) — A stash of fireworks meant to be sold during a cheerleading squad's fundraiser in Huntington Beach was stolen this week.
The squad from Edison High School isn't sure what else was taken in the theft Tuesday night but said the squad's biggest pack of fireworks called The Big Bang was taken from their fireworks stand. It sells for $500.
The teens have worked hard this week to earn enough to send their team to Florida to compete. Edison High's varsity cheer team won their division at nationals in March.
Hannah Geddy, a cheer and song adviser, said they think the theft happened about 4 that morning and said the person cracked the chain.
"We did the best we could to keep it secure. We have a sweet dad that offered to stay here all night. Pulled up his camper. He did a great job," Geddy said.
"We were obviously very heartbroken because all of our parents and our adviser and our coaches have all worked really hard to support us," said Lyndsie Vale, a song leader. "And so that somebody thought that it was OK to do this, it's very heartbreaking for us."
"Our community is pretty tight-knit and very traditional, so if you hit one of us, you hit us all," she added.
The community has stepped up. On Thursday, Vons, which is across the parking lot from school, decided to donate $1,000 to the girls.
Police have no suspects.
