Firefighters rescue dog that fell into a Whittier storm drain

Firefighters try to rescue trapped pooch with hot dogs, bologna and treats

Firefighters tried an unorthodox method while trying to rescue a dog that fell down a Whittier storm drain.

According to the Los Angeles County Fire Department, the dog was trapped inside a storm drain in the 1500 block of South Delamare Drive.

After struggling to coax the dog into a harness attached to a long pole, firefighters tried to lure the trapped pooch by using cut-up pieces of a hot dog.

The crew tried to use several hot dogs, pieces of bologna and even treats to coax the dog out.

"There was a point towards the end where we were dumping a bunch of food there and he didn't want anything to do with it. He had so much food," said firefighter Jason Mendoza.

The unorthodox tactic didn't work, prompting one of the crew members to climb down into the storm drain.

After several attempts, a firefighter emerged from the drain with the dog in hand.
