Firefighters Respond To Sinkhole In Boyle Heights
LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) - Firefighters responded to reports of a sinkhole in the Boyle Heights area on Friday morning, around 8:15AM.
On the 500 block of South Mission Road, crews were required to use heavy machinery to prevent a vehicle, that was teetering over the edge, from falling into the hole. Utility crews are on the scene to handle any ensuing problems that may occur.
The heavy machinery will also remain on scene to prevent damage to any natural gas lines below.
Los Angeles Department of Public Works has announced that the sinkhole was caused by a collapsed sewer line that has since spilled between 2,000 and 3,000 gallons of sewage. Authorities have placed sandbags at sewer drains throughout the area and are working to stop the sewage from reaching the Los Angeles River.
The LADPW reports that the sewage line is 95 years old, and collapsed at its "top portion."
In a statement, they additionally reported that, "a bypass is being set up by (an) emergency contractor in order to isolate the affected area, remove water and debris and make repairs... The cost of repair is estimated
to be between $400,000 (and) $1 million."
More to follow.
