Firefighter injured while responding to greater alarm fire in DTLA

Commercial building fire in DTLA

Firefighters with the Los Angeles Fire Department are working to put out a greater alarm blaze in a 5,000-square-foot commercial building in a row of single-story businesses in the 200 block of East 12th Street in downtown Los Angeles.

The fire broke out around 3:08 p.m. Saturday. According to Brian Humphrey of LAFD, heavy smoke was showing when firefighters arrived.

One firefighter suffered non-life-threatening blunt force trauma to his arm when he fell during the overhaul phase, Humphrey said. The firefighter was taken by ambulance to a hospital for treatment but was in good condition.

A team of 111 firefighters  took 33 minutes to put out the flames in what Humphrey termed "aggressive and well-coordinated offensive firefighting operations."

Ultimately, three adjacent businesses out of eight in the row sustained fire damage, he said. All had smoke impacts.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation. There are no reports of injuries.
