Fire Rips Through Mobile Home Park In Fontana

FONTANA (CBSLA) – A fire driven by Santa Ana winds of 40 miles per hour tore through a mobile home park in Fontana early Friday morning, destroying at least one home and damaging several more.

The fire was reported at around 12:30 a.m. in the 15200 block of Orchid Street. San Bernardino County firefighters arrived on scene to find the flames spreading quickly through a mobile home park, driven by powerful winds.

Several downed power lines and live ammunition created challenges for crews, the fire department said.

"My cousin comes banging on the door, 'there's a fire, there's a fire,' so then we come out, and we see the whole back neighborhood, the neighbors behind us, is going up in flames, so we get the hose to try to contain it, keep it from going to our house," neighbor Jimmy Vanvleet said.

It took firefighters about one hour to bring it under control. There were no reported injuries.

The blaze destroyed one mobile home and five detached garages, according to the fire department. It caught fire to three power poles and several palm trees.

A wind advisory is in effect through 3 p.m. Friday for the mountains and foothills of the Inland Empire, including the cities of Fontana, Crestline, Running Springs and Banning. Winds of up to 60 mph are possible, according to the National Weather Service.
