Fire Crews Battle Brush Fire Near 10 Freeway In Covina
COVINA (CBSLA.com) — Firefighters made quick work of a three-acre brush fire in Covina on Saturday.
Firefighters were dispatched at 1:02 p.m. to the hillsides near the westbound 10 Freeway at Via Verde, she said.
By 2:23 p.m, more than 150 firefighters had a complete perimeter around the fire and didn't expect the blaze to grow any further, L.A. County Fire Capt. Brian Jordan said.
Knockdown was achieved about 30 minutes later, he said.
A fire department helicopter stationed just minutes away was a major help in battling the brusher, Jordan said.
No damage to properties or injuries were reported.
The California Highway Patrol initially blocked all westbound lanes of the 10 east of Via Verde and advised motorists to use the Orange (57) Freeway
as an alternative.
The freeway lanes were shut down so firefighters had safe access up the hill and no chance of getting hit by oncoming cars, Jordan said.
A short time later, however, the CHP re-opened two westbound lanes. A cause of the fire was under investigation.
