Ex-Redlands Teacher Who Had Student's Baby Released From Jail Early

REDLANDS (CBSLA.com) — A former Redlands teacher convicted of having sexual relations with multiple students and giving birth to a teenager's baby has been released from jail early.

KNX 1070's Megan Goldsby reports 29-year-old Laura Whitehurst was released Sunday after serving only half of a year-long sentence handed down last August.

The former AP English teacher at Redlands and Citrus Valley high schools pleaded guilty last summer to committing sexual acts with boys between the ages of 14 and 16 following her arrest in July.

The abuse with the Citrus High School student who fathered her child, and was present for the birth of his baby in June, lasted more than a year, according to prosecutors.

Whitehurst, who originally faced 41 felony counts of having sex with a minor and oral copulation with a person under the age of 18, took a plea bargain — something her victims had asked the judge to avoid — on July 31.

At the sentencing, the 17-year-old father of Whitehurst's child spoke out against the plea deal, saying, "Whitehurst's criminal actions against me have scarred me emotionally and will affect every relationship I have for the rest of my life."

Whitehurst will remain on probation for five years and must undergo counseling.
