Elderly Couple Held At Gunpoint In La Canada Flintridge Home Invasion

LA CANADA FLINTRIDGE (CBSLA.com) — Sheriff's officials Friday are investigating a home invasion robbery in the Crescenta Valley for the second time in as many days.

An elderly couple was held at gunpoint around 10 p.m. Thursday at their home in the 5100 block of Jarvis Avenue in La Canada Flintridge, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said.

The suspects, both described as black men wearing hooded sweatshirts, entered the home through an unlocked back screen door.

They brandished handguns as the ransacked the home for jewelry and cash.

"They were yelling 'Police!'," the 84-year-old female victim said. "He kept yelling, 'Where are the diamonds? Where do you keep the money?'"

The couple was not injured in the incident, but the suspects did steal the woman's diamond engagement ring, which she had worn for 64 years.

CBS2's Jeff Nguyen spoke to the 84-year-old victim who said she didn't understand why the thieves were looking for jewelry.

"I was a teacher," the victim said, "my husband worked in an office. We don't have diamonds. We don't have jewels. This is it."

She added, "The worst thing about the whole thing was their threats that they were going to take my husband.  My husband has dementia and I didn't know what would happen so that was absolutely the worst."

On Wednesday night, a La Crescenta man was tied up during a home invasion robbery around 11:30 p.m. in the 2900 block of Los Olivos Lane, officials said.

The victim said he had gone to sleep for the night when he awoke to find two black men tying him up.

"The suspects took turns holding him at gunpoint while the other ransacked the home," officials said. "The suspects left the location with an unknown amount of cash, jewelry, and electronics."

The victim was not injured in the incident.

Authorities believe the same suspects were involved in both robberies. The incidents were being investigated by the department's Major Crimes Unit.
