Hot Spot Flares Up In Eagle Rock Fire; 2 Freeway Transition Road Still Closed

EAGLE ROCK (CBSLA) — Firefighters worked to contain a flare-up Monday in a brush fire that broke out over the weekend along the 134 Freeway.

The fire initially broke out Sunday afternoon and burned dangerously close to a Glendale neighborhood, prompting the evacuation of 100 homes. The mandatory evacuation orders were lifted by 10 p.m.

Firefighters battled the blaze from the air aggressively, making water drops into the night. No homes were burned and no injuries were reported. As of Monday evening, the blaze was more than 70% contained. Firefighters said they were hoping to have the fire completely knocked out by early Tuesday morning.

"We arrived around 8 a.m. this morning, and since we've been here, this is not a wind driven fire, it's been topography driven," Battalion Chief Jim Holland said. "The wind has been actually in our favor."

Firefighters conducted water drops on the area Monday afternoon after a hot spot flared up near the top of the hill.

Los Angeles Fire Department officials said the steep terrain was a big challenge. tells us the steep terrain is a big challenge. Crews were on the perimeter working methodically to make sure there were not anymore hot spots throughout Monday evening.

"The plan for tonight is to leave companies on the hill," Holland said. "We're coordinating with Glendale Fire Department as well as L.A. County with their camp crews who are on the scene, we will keep companies on the hill throughout the night protecting the homes and patrolling the neighborhoods making sure this fire is cold and out."

As of Monday evening, the northbound 2 Freeway to the westbound 134 Freeway, the northbound 2 Freeway  to the Holly Drive off ramp and the westbound 134 Freeway to both the northbound and the southbound 2 Freeway were all closed until further notice.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
