Suspected Drunk Driver Who Caused Deadly Crash Previously Arrested For DUI

WINNETKA (CBSLA.com) — CBS2 News has confirmed that the suspected drunk driver who caused a deadly crash on Roscoe Boulevard Thursday was arrested for driving drunk just a few weeks ago.

The three-car crash in Winnetka killed a single mother in her early 20s who was heading home from work.

Police say 28-year-old Jose Mejia from Northridge was going above freeway speeds in a 35 mile per hour zone early Thursday morning when he crashed into the SUV driven by the woman. She died at the scene.

Police are still not releasing her name but loved ones say she was a single mother of a 12-year-old boy.

Mejia was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and arrested on suspicion of second degree murder.

CBS2 News has learned from the California Highway Patrol that Mejia was also arrested in downtown L.A. last month for DUI and he was arrested back in April for public intoxication.

Police say Mejia also injured three other people in the crash, including two men who were driving with him.

Investigators expect to charge him with murder.
