COSTA MESA (CBSLA.com) — A fiery single-car crash killed a driver and injured his teenage passenger early Wednesday morning in Orange County.

The accident happened around 12:30 a.m. in the 2300 block of Placentia Avenue, across from Estancia High School, in Costa Mesa, police said.

A witness reported seeing a silver BMW traveling at a high rate of speed when it swerved, lost control and hit a large tree.

The unidentified male driver died at the scene after suffering blunt force trauma, Lt. Greg Scott said.

"The car caught on fire as fire personnel arrive and extinguished the flames, before removing the 17-year-old male front passenger," he added.

The teen was transported to Western Medical Center in Santa Ana and treated for a possible broken jaw.

The crash was under investigation.
