Driver Killed In Lancaster Rollover Crash After Wheel Dislodges

LANCASTER (CBSLA.com) — The Lancaster Sheriff's Station Traffic Unit is investigating a fatal rollover crash that occurred Friday morning.

The crash involving two vehicles happened around 11 a.m. at Avenue N near 35th Street West.

Preliminary information says the driver of a 1969 Toyota Land Cruiser was traveling westbound on Avenue N near 35th Street West about 50 mph. For unknown reasons, the driver's side rear wheel dislodged from the Toyota, authorities said.

The wheel traveled into oncoming traffic and struck an eastbound 2011 Honda Odyssey, causing moderate damage to the vehicle and minor injuries to the Honda driver.

After the wheel dislodged, the driver of the Toyota lost control and the vehicle rolled over on the north shoulder of the highway. The Toyota driver was ejected from the vehicle and fatally injured.

An on-duty Lancaster Station sheriff's sergeant was also traveling eastbound on Avenue N, a short distance behind the Honda, and witnessed the accident.

The sergeant quickly requested assistance and medical personnel.

Authorities said alcohol does not appear to be a factor in this crash.
