Driver dies after crashing into a water channel in Carson

A 28-year-old died after his vehicle crashed into the Dominguez Channel in Carson overnight.

The crash was reported along Avalon Boulevard near the 405 Freeway around 3:45 a.m. on Friday, according to the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department.

Authorities believe the driver was going around 75 mph when he attempted to change lanes causing the vehicle to spin out on the wet pavement. The car then hit the corner edge of the wall barrier before landing in the river.

LAPD said the car was going so fast that the engine and transmission were detached.

The driver was taken to a local hospital where he later died from his injuries.

Search and rescue teams were in the water for several hours looking for a possible second victim, but deputies believe only one person was involved in the deadly crash.

The driver killed has not been identified yet. The cause for the crash remains under investigation.
