Driver Dies After Car Is Split In Half In Violent San Bernardino Crash

SAN BERNARDINO (CBSLA.com) — A driver was killed Monday following a violent crash in San Bernardino that may have been the result of a possible street race.

Security footage from an auto repair shop located a block away showed one car on 9th Street passing a white truck. Moments later, another car flies by.

The crash unfolded in the parking lot of E. Neal Roberts Elementary School, which was not in session due to spring break.

"All of a sudden this car that jumped into the school. Him and another dark-colored car were racing westbound and all of a sudden the car that's up in the school turned around, lost control, and hit the light pole and spun around and there it is," said Anthony Spinuzzi, a witness.

Witnesses say street racing between two cars possibly caused the driver of a mangled silver Acura to lose control, hit a power pole, clip a tree and take out a fence.

Spinuzzi says he believes the vehicles were traveling at speeds of up to 90 mph.

Police were working into the night to determine what happened because they say there are different accounts of what unfolded.

They are hoping to speak with the driver of a second vehicle (seen in the picture below).

"But if it was street racing, you don't know who you gonna injure, who you gonna hurt. You know, you're not being responsible, you know? And it's wrong," said "Levenstra," another witness. "You could kill people by doing something stupid for the moment."

"You're having fun for the moment," added the woman, who works at the school. "Is it worth it? No it's not."

The impact of the crash caused the vehicle to be torn in half and partially down some power lines.

"You have innocent bystanders. You have people walking with their kids. You have people crossing the street. Just thank God no one else is deceased," said Victoria Perez, a neighbor.
