Dogs Corralled After Police Pursuit In Long Beach Now With Animal Services

LONG BEACH (CBSLA.com) — The half a dozen dogs seized at the end of a bizarre police pursuit in Long Beach Monday night are now at Long Beach Animal Care Services.

The California Highway Patrol captured the three adult females and three 4-month-old puppies at the culmination of the chase that began around 8:30 p.m. in Buena Park, where officers saw what they thought was a stranded car on the side of the 91 Freeway.

When officers approached, the driver took off and the chase was on. The pursuit ended an hour later after officers performed two PIT maneuvers on the northbound 710 Freeway, south of Del Amo Boulevard in Long Beach.

After a short standoff, the driver got out of the car to surrender, and the dogs jumped out of the car as well and scurried all over the freeway.

It took officers a while to corral the six pit-bull mixes before turning them over to Long Beach Animal Care Services.

"They appear bright, alert and responsive and of good temperament," said Ted Stevens of Long Beach Animal Care Services. "We're going to keep them safe. We'll keep them clean and healthy and fed and just take care of them until we can identify the owner."

A relative, who didn't want to be identified, said the dogs' owner is Tiffini Tobe. He called the 47-year-old a dog collector and said she often acts erratically. Twitter accounts under the Tobe name show pictures of other dogs.

La Habra, where Tobe lives, has a four-dog limit, which means Tobe will have to put up some of her dogs for adoption.

The CHP said Tobe was arrested on suspicion of felony evasion and driving under the influence.
