Man Killed By Deputies After Pursuit Of Stolen Pickup Truck Ends In Crash At San Bernardino Gas Station
SAN BERNARDINO (CBSLA) — A man was shot and killed by San Bernardino County Sheriff's deputies in the early morning hours Monday after allegedly leading them on a high-speed pursuit in a stolen pickup truck which ended in a crash outside a gas station.
He was identified as 28-year-old Bernie Rascon.
According to San Bernardino police, the chase started just before midnight Sunday in the Muscoy area when a deputy ran the truck's plate and found it had been reported stolen. The deputy tried to pull the truck over, but the driver took off.
The chase ended a short time later with a crash outside a Mobil gas station in the 3900 block of North Hallmark Parkway in San Bernardino, right off the 215 Freeway.
At the end of the pursuit, deputies opened fire on the pickup truck, leaving several holes in the driver's side door. The driver was wounded and rushed to a hospital, where he died, police said.
"I heard like a car crash, and then gunshots," said Josh Soto, who was staying at a nearby motel.
No deputies were hurt. It's unclear why deputies opened fire or whether the suspect was armed or returned fire.
San Bernardino police are investigating the case since the shooting occurred within city limits. Investigators will be reviewing security video from the gas station. There's no word on whether deputies had body cameras.
Surrounding roads were shut down, but have since reopened.
