Man Shot, Killed By LA Deputies During Barricade At Compton Home
COMPTON (CBSLA) – Los Angeles County Sheriff's deputies Thursday morning shot and killed a man who they said opened fire on them while a search warrant was being served at a Compton home.
Neighbors of the home in the 500 block of Bradfield Street described the chaotic morning after deputies shot and killed a man at about 5:30 a.m.
"I just heard the helicopters flying this morning," Rosalind Taylor, a neighbor said.
According to the department, the deputies initially went to the home to serve a search warrant for felony weapons and drug violations. While there, investigators said the man shot at them and then started a fire – possibly to destroy evidence.
"During the incident, the suspect did set fire and then when he came out, there was another shooting," Lt. Robert Westphal, with LASD, said. "The individual that was struck by gunfire was the individual that we were looking for in the search warrant."
The man, who has not been identified, was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators said a weapon was recovered at the scene.
Firefighters responded to the home to put out the garage fire before the bomb squad was called in to investigate.
Taylor, who has lived in the neighborhood since the 1970s, said the area is not as safe as it used to be.
"They were at that house five doors down, you know, it's always a lot of activity down there," she said. "It doesn't surprise me. Of course, yes, it's unsettling."
No deputies were injured in the shooting.
