The collision occurred during school-drop off at 7:20 a.m. in the 13400 block of West Vanowen Street, a couple blocks from Kittridge Street Elementary School, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department.

The two were taken to a local hospital by ambulance. The crossing guard, identified as Delia Huerta Arrearan, was initially in critical condition and later died from her injuries, Los Angeles police said.

The girl's injuries were described as minor.

The driver of the car, a man, remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators, who believe the crash was an accident, the fire department said.

The city Department of Transportation said it's working with the LAPD during its investigation.

A GoFundMe page was set up for Arrearan to help her family cover funeral and memorial expenses. According to the page, Arrearan had been part of LADOT's crossing guard program for 13 years.
