Police Investigate Crash That Killed Couple, Seriously Hurt Infant On 14 Freeway In Acton
ACTON (CBSLA.com) — Police Wednesday were investigating an accident that killed a Palmdale couple and left their infant with major injuries.
The crash took place around 7:55 p.m. Tuesday on the Antelope Valley (14) Freeway just north of Santiago Road in Acton, the California Highway Patrol said.
Ivan Ramirez, 31 was driving a 2014 Ford Focus northbound on the freeway when the vehicle crashed into a pole. His wife, 31-year-old Felicia Martinez, was sitting in the passenger seat.
Martinez was pronounced dead at the scene.
The man and his baby were transported to Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center, where the father succumbed to his injuries a short time later.
CHP Officer Gil Hernandez said the baby was strapped into a rear-facing car seat, and he credited it to helping save her life.
"At this time, we have broken bones. She appeared to be stable. We aren't certain until the doctor's evaluate her and see what her overall injuries are."
The baby is in the care of the Department of Children and Family Services until relatives are located.
According to CHP, more than 90 percent of car seats are installed incorrectly. Luckily for this baby, the CHP said, this car seat did exactly what it was supposed to do.
