Concrete barriers blocking Chatsworth street parking frustrates homeless advocates
Concrete barriers inexplicably appeared along several street parking spots in Chatsworth.
It's unclear who placed the large slabs but homeless advocates believe there are meant to deter RVs and anyone who is homeless from parking or staying in the area.
"Basically, what we're doing here now, trying to figure out who's doing it," Pastor Kathy Huck said. "If I could collaborate with the person who's doing it, maybe we come up with a better, more reasonable solution."
Huck is an outreach worker with "About My Father's Business," a homeless outreach ministry based in Canoga Park. She said she's been dealing with this issue for about a year now. The barriers have complicated her job since they displace even more people and disconnect them from the services and resources they need.
"We can hate seeing them here, but they have to be someplace," Huck said. "And if you put these cinder blocks or anything out to remove people, they're going somewhere (else)."
Huck believes a short-term solution is keeping the area clean by picking up trash while officials work toward something bigger.
"I would like to see the powers that be bring some of the unhoused folks into the meeting, hear them out, and then you come up with resolutions," she said.
