Armed Man Surrenders To SWAT After Tense 6-Hour Standoff In Compton

COMPTON (CBSLA.com) – A tense six-hour standoff ended in Compton Saturday afternoon, where a man barricaded himself at a home with his son.

The incident began just before 10 a.m. when deputies responded to 911 call regarding an assault with a deadly weapon in the 600 block of North Kalsman Avenue, between Rosecrans Avenue and Compton Boulevard.

According to the L.A. County Sheriff's Department, the 49-year-old suspect walked outside his residence with a rifle or shotgun and threatened gardeners who were using a leaf blower next door and may have placed a shotgun to a person's head inside or outside his home, though authorities have not confirmed the latter.

The suspect's brother, who told CBS2 News he did not want to be identified, said Derrick Bryant and his son had been surrounded by a SWAT team. The 4-year-old boy left with his mother when deputies arrived. Bryant surrendered around 3:30 p.m.

The suspect's brother said he'd never seen signs that Bryant would ever do something like this. "[It's] totally out of character."

LASD said Bryant faces a charge of assault with a deadly weapon.
