Dominguez High School campus closed after 3-alarm fire erupts in cafeteria
The Manuel Dominguez High School campus in Compton remained closed Tuesday after a major fire destroyed the cafeteria Monday night. Officials are waiting for fire investigators to give the all-clear for students and staff to return. Air-quality tests were being performed on site.
Compton, Downey and Los Angeles County firefighters responded to the location at 15301 South San Jose Avenue in Compton just after 7 p.m. on Monday. The fire began in the cafeteria. Firefighters were able to keep the fire from spreading to other campus buildings. They remained at the scene until 3:15 a.m. Tuesday. No injuries were reported.
Classes were canceled and the campus was closed Tuesday and Wednesday.
"Sadly, the fire resulted in major structural damage to the cafeteria, seating area, and parent center. In an abundance of caution, campus will be closed to staff and students on Wednesday, February 22, 2023," Compton Unified School District officials said in a statement.
Students who rely on the school for breakfast and lunch can still get meals at nearby Clinton Elementary School, located at 6500 East Compton Blvd.
The district said that students could continue their courses through assignments provided through their Google Classrooms. Off-campus activities will continue, according to officials.
The cause of the fire was under investigation.
