Compton bakery reopens after smash-and-grab burglary during street takeover
A Compton bakery that was ransacked during a nearby street takeover on Tuesday reopened on Friday morning.
Ruben's Bakery & Mexican Food, located at 2701 N Santa Fe Ave, was raided by dozens of people after a car backed into the business multiple times around 3:30 a.m., according to Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.
Surveillance video shows the mob rushing through the store, clearing the shelves of merchandise causing the bakery over $10,000 in damages, according to the owner.
"I just want it to be over and to be back to how we were and just get back to work," said Ruben Ramirez Jr., co-owner of Ruben's. "My anger's gone, I'm just happy that we were able to open up again."
Authorities said around 100 people took part in the street takeover, burning mattresses and Christmas trees in the street nearby during the massive street takeover.
Remnants of the disastrous event remained at the store however on Friday. The front door of the store still remained covered with plywood instead of glass, but that didn't stop regulars of the decades old store from stopping in.
The owners of the bakery attended a city council meeting on Tuesday night to share their frustration about the street takeovers that have been happening more frequently throughout the city.
Compton Mayor Emma Sharif said that they have been working on an ordinance for months, but nothing has been enacted yet.
