CHP: Missing Carson Couple Died In Palm Springs Car Accident

CARSON (CBSA.com) — An elderly couple missing since Monday died in a car accident in the desert east of Palm Springs, officials said.

Jose Benjamin Bracero, 73, and Consuelo Bracero, 75,  who both suffer from Alzheimer's disease, were last seen leaving their home in the 22000 block of Kinard Avenue in Carson Monday afternoon.

The next day, the couple was traveling eastbound on Interstate 10 in the Ford Escort when the accident happened around 12:20 p.m., the California Highway Patrol said.

"For unknown reasons, the Ford traveled to the right, off the roadway, onto the dirt shoulder and subsequently overturned," Officer Mike Radford said.

Consuelo Bracero was pronounced dead at the scene. Her husband was transported to a local hospital where he later passed away.

"Jose and Consuelo were not wearing their seatbelts at the time of the collision," Officer Radford added.

Drugs or alcohol do not appear to be factors in the crash.
