Children's Hospital LA Shares Check List For Kids' Safe Return To School

GLENDALE (CBSLA.com) — The time for students to return to classes has arrived, and Children's Hospital Los Angeles has come up with a checklist on how they can do so safely.

While some kids are showing excitement about returning to the classroom, others, inevitably, are filled with anxiety about classes or classmates.

Children's Hospital, seeing this previously, says a dress rehearsal may do much to release nerves.

"Get their backpack by the door, get up at the time they need to in the morning, and drive to school as if its the first day of school," Children's Hospital pediatric psychologist Stephanie Marcy said.

Doctors also say getting enough sleep and eating breakfast every day are both essential for mental and physical health, ultimately urging parents to get their kids medical physicals and the necessary vaccinations.

"...then you can ensure that your children are getting the protection that they need to keep them safe and to help keep our community safe," Dr. Juan Espinoza said.

Another thing parents should monitor is their children's bike helmets. Dr. Jeffrey Upperman says the helmets are only good if worn properly by the child.

As far as exercise, sleep, and staying safe, doctors agree it is essential for the child to see their parent providing them as an example by including such measures into their own lives.
