Chargers Top Free Agent Targets Of 2015

With the NFL free agency only days away, the San Diego Chargers are in need of top position players to compete in 2015 with the AFC powerhouses. The positions where they have major holes are at running back, defensive tackle and cornerback positions. The Chargers were one of the worst teams in sacks, collecting only 26 in the 2014 season – 29th in the NFL. If the Chargers want to spend, they should unload on one the best available pass rusher in free agency that they can afford, defensive tackle Terrance Knighton. Here are the top three free agent targets for the Chargers:

Terrance Knighton: The Chargers' pass defense was horrible last season. Whoever played against the Chargers, the offensive coordinator knew their quarterback would have plenty of time to throw the ball. The Chargers only had 26 sacks on the season. Chargers General Manager Tom Telesco knows Ndamukong Suh is a asking for a lot of money, so he'll likely go to a major-market team. The next-best available is Terrance Knighton. He won't be cheap but a price the Chargers can afford. His presence is big and fast. According to Pro Football Focus, Knighton was the 12th-best defensive tackle in the league. He played in all 16 games and had 28 tackles with two sacks last season with the Broncos.

Brandon Flowers:

With the signing of Brandon Flowers from free agency and first-round pick Jason Verrett last season, the Bolts' pass defense went from 29th in 2013 to 4th in 2014. If Verrett hadn't been hurt halfway through the season, the Chargers would have likely been in top three. Telesco knows the value of corners, and re-signing Flowers is a priority. When Flowers and Verrett are healthy, the Chargers could potentially have the one of the best cornerback duos in the league. Telesco should sign him to a two-year deal. Flowers said he "would love to return to San Diego."

DeMarco Murray and Mark Ingram:

With running back Ryan Mathews hitting free agency, the Chargers know they have to sign a No. 1 running back for 2015. If Mathews weren't so injury prone, Telesco would have no problem re-signing the back from Fresno State. However, he can rarely stay healthy, leaving his quarterback in a deep hole. There is a lot of talent at the position in the draft, but it isn't likely the Bolts will get a chance to select a top-tier back due to their draft position. Two free agents that would fit in well in San Diego are Mark Ingram and DeMarco Murray. Murray was a beast last season with the Cowboys. Every team in need of a running back will try to acquire Murray, who led the league in rushing last season. The Chargers could have a shot since they have nearly $25 million of cap space for 2015. If Telesco does pull it off, you can forget about signing Knighton. If they sign Knighton, Telesco could grab Ingram on a great deal.
