Celebrity Attorney Reveals The Do's Of Divorce

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — Whether you're a Kardashian or a Baldwin, celebrities prove that breaking up is hard to do.

Attorney-to-the-stars Laura Wasser has spent more than 20 years helping couples headed to Splitsville. While it's often a messy process, this lawyer says it doesn't have to be.

In her new book, "It Doesn't Have To Be That Way," Wasser reveals how some stars -- like Ryan Reynolds, Angelina Jolie and Britney Spears -- got through their break-ups smoothly.

TV personality Kim Kardashian sang her praises after the attorney handled her divorce with NBA player Kris Humphries. She's been quoted saying, "I trust Laura like no one else. She is the voice of reason during a time of uncertainty."

"Communication, even if you didn't have it in your marriage, it's really important in your divorce. People say, 'Well, maybe I shouldn't be talking to her right now because...' -- talk to her!  With very few exceptions, anything the two of you can work out by yourselves with a legal pad at your kitchen table is better, it's cheaper!" Wasser said.

The lawyer says sometimes the messiest part of divorce is handling the kids.

"Everyone always says to me, 'All I care about is the kids, my priority is the kids.' OK, if that's the case, figure out a way to rise above. You may be married to one of the biggest jerks in the world, but that's your problem. Don't make it your kids' problem," Wasser said.

Although divorce is never easy, Wasser discovered that there can be a silver lining.

"Even though a person may not be a great spouse, they can still be a great parent. I see so many people that split up, and once they've split up, the other parent, maybe the one that worked more before, really does become a much better parent because they're on their own," she said.
