Caught On Video: Chauffeur Threatens Motorist In Van Nuys Road Rage Incident
VAN NUYS (CBSLA.com) — Detectives Wednesday investigated a case of apparent road rage that was captured on video in Van Nuys.
According to the Los Angeles Police Department, the incident unfolded on Tuesday evening in the 15400 block of Sherman Way.
The victim, Shahnam Asbaghi, told authorities the driver of a black Yukon XL -- who appeared to be a chauffeur for a private company -- closely trailed his vehicle on the 405 Freeway through Burbank.
Asbaghi said he became nervous and exited the freeway early on Sherman Way and the Yukon rear ended his vehicle. The driver then exited the SUV, punched Ashbaghi's window five times and took off from the area in his vehicle.
In an effort to try and get the license plate number, Asbaghi followed the Yukon down the street.
At a red light, the driver once again exited his vehicle and approached Asbaghi. This time, however, he recorded the encounter on his cell phone.
In the video, the driver strikes Asbaghi's window with what appears to be part of a car jack or a crowbar. He then goes back to his car after shouting profanities.
"It was pretty vicious," Asbaghi said. "I was terrified. I'm still shaking. It was a pretty intense moment for me."
According to police, the suspect could be charged with assault with a deadly weapon.
"It's a situation that occurs quite often unfortunately," said Lt. Jim Gavin. "We ask the citizens, please call 911. Don't get involved. If somebody pulls you over because they cut you off, keep going. Let us get involved."
The private car company says they are investigating the video independently.
