Caught On Tape: Venice Man Accused Of Allowing His Dogs To Kill Neighbor's Cat

VENICE (CBSLA.com) — A Venice man is being accused of allowing his two dogs to kill a neighbor's cat.

The mauling was caught on security video that was posted Thursday on YouTube.

The tape set off a debate between those who believe the man's dogs pulled him and those who think he could have done more to stop the attack.

KCAL9's Tom Wait on Thursday spoke to Lou Parra, the cat's owner.

Parra didn't witness the attack live but is devastated from the aftermath and from what he saw on video.

"I was just in shock," said Parra. "My heart dropped. As soon as I saw the video, I was just, I don't know what to say. I was just so full of anger."

Animal Control is investigating the incident that occurred just before 4 p.m. Monday.

On the nearly eight-minute video, various passersby are seen interacting with the cat, named Sally.

Across the street, a man can be seen walking his two large dogs. He stops and the dogs stop. Observing the cat on the other side of the street, the man and his dogs slowly cross the street toward the cat. It is unclear if the man saw the cat.

The dogs clearly see the cat and start to bolt, pulling the man hard. While he controls their leashes, he loses control of their actions. One or both of the dogs start to attack the cat. After about 10 seconds, the cat gets free with the help of the dog owner.

When the cat runs to the other side of the street to evade the dogs, they again pull the man back to the other side of the street and continue the fatal attack behind a bush.

Moments later, the man is seen taking the lifeless cat to the owner's home. The dog owner is shown cavalierly tossing the cat's carcass over the fence.

"I go outside, and I see my cat," says Parra, "and she's covered in a blanket. I had to get it from other people what happened."

A neighbor who witnessed the attack from an upstairs window told Wait he didn't think the dog owner did enough to stop the attack.

"He kind of just followed them and didn't make any attempt to restrain or redirect them," Greg McClure said.

Wait knocked on the door of the dog owner's home, but there was no answer.
