Card Reader Discovered Attached To 7-Eleven ATM In El Segundo

EL SEGUNDO (CBSLA.com)  —  Authorities say a card reader was found attached to an ATM at a 7-Eleven in El Segundo Monday.

Officers were called to the store located at 100 W. Imperial Avenue around 12:40 p.m.

A skimming device was discovered attached to the ATM machine, police said.

Authorities said an unknown suspect(s) had covertly attached a card reader and small camera to the ATM. With these devices, a thief would be able to capture the credit/debit card number and PIN and allow anyone to steal money from their accounts.

It is unknown how long the devices were in place.

Officials advise anyone that used this machine to carefully review financial records.

Police want to remind the public to be aware of any ATMs that appear suspicious.

They advise:

• Inspect the ATM, gas pump, or credit card reader before using it -- be suspicious if you see anything loose, crooked, or damaged, or if you notice scratches or adhesive/tape residue.

• Pull or shake the card receptacle to see if it comes loose. Some skimmers are applied to the ATM with double-sided tape or adhesive.

• When entering your PIN, block the keypad with your other hand to prevent possible hidden cameras from documenting the number.
