San Pedro Goes Car Free For A Day For CicLAvia

SAN PEDRO  (AP) — It's a car free day in parts of LA.

Some six miles of streets in neighborhoods from San Pedro to Wilmington are closed to motor vehicles Sunday as the city's latest celebration of the CicLAvia festival opens the lanes to cyclists.

The north-south route stretches through an area near the Port of Los Angeles.

Thousands of cyclists, skaters and pedestrians are expected to participate in CicLAvia, modeled on a weekly car-free event started in Bogota, Colombia. It came to LA in 2010.

Food trucks, musical performers and neighborhood guides are set up along the route. The streets will be closed to cars until 4 p.m.

Previous routes have gone through South Los Angeles, downtown LA, and along Wilshire Boulevard.

CBS 2's Joy Benedict reported this was the first CicLAvia to hit the harbor area and people there couldn't have been more thrilled.

"You get to see communities when you ride your bike in places you'd never go," said Cathy Higa from Irvine.

"It's nice riding on the street with no cars or traffic -- you don't have to worry about it," said Gerry Gomez of San Pedro.

Benedict reports that another CivLAvia is set for this area on October 8.
