2 Drivers Stung By More Than 600 Bees Following Car Crash In La Canada Flintridge

LA CANADA FLINTRIDGE  (CBSLA.com) — Two drivers were stung by more than 600 bees following a two-vehicle car crash into a tree Sunday afternoon in La Canada Flintridge.

At least one of the vehicles struck a tree in the 2000 block of Los Amigos Street just before 3 p.m. dislodging a large bee hive.

The two women drivers involved in the tw0-vehicle crash were stung at least 600 times between them.

CBS2's Bobby Kaple reported that there were many scary moments for residents of the area as well as the people involved in the car accident.

Hours later, Kaple said there were still many bees in the area.

"We got out of our truck to shoot some video when the bees started circling us," he reported nearly two hours after the swarm first formed.

Just before 3 p.m., two cars collided in a minor accident.  After the hive was dislodged, thousands of bees dispersed.

The bees stung  three people, a deputy who came to aid  the two women drivers involved in the crash. One of the women is 51, the other 17.

Witnesses told Kaple that the 17-year-old, was stung over 100 times. He said she was reportedly screaming as she tried to get away from the bees.

"That's when neighbors started pouring out of their homes," said Kaple.

Kaple also reported that the other woman was stung as many as 500 times.

Deputies said the women were both attacked as they were exchanging insurance information.

Officials said the first deputy on scene used a fire extinguisher to remove the bees from the 17-year-old. He then used a hose from a nearby home to remove the rest of the bees.

The 51-year-old, meanwhile, fearing for her life, ran to the rear of a residence and jumped into a swimming pool.

The deputy did not require hospital treatment.
