Armed suspect standoff prompts Canyon Country evacuations; suspect in custody
An armed suspect wanted for robbery was barricaded inside an SUV in Canyon Country, prompting some evacuations as sheriff's personnel worked to take him into custody on Monday.
At 12:17 p.m., the sheriff's department tweeted the suspect was taken into custody and the area was cleared. Evacuations were still in effect as the investigation continued.
Deputies responded to the 19300 block of Newhouse Street around 6:30 a.m. after a brief pursuit, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.
The homes along the 19000 block of Newhouse Street were evacuated as the situation continues in the area. Residents are being taken to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at 19513 Drycliff Street.
Deputies have closed off Delight Street and Whites Canyon Road in the area, and the public was urged to avoid the area.
Canyon Springs Community Elementary School and Preschool are located about a half-mile from the scene and they remain open.
A Special Enforcement Bureau team responded to the scene and crisis negotiators were working to contact the suspect inside the vehicle.
