Caltrans Workers To Remove Unstable Rocks Along Hillside Of Closed Portion Of PCH
LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — Caltrans workers Tuesday will rappel down a hillside along a closed section of the Pacific Coast Highway to remove loose rocks.
Climbers will make their way down the roughly 150-foot sloop just south of Mugu Rock around 10:30 a.m. and use their hands, feet and crowbars to dislodge any unstable rocks and boulders.
A portion of the highway was shut down on Dec. 12 after heavy rain caused about a dozen mud, rock and debris slides between Yerba Buena and Las Posas roads. The slides came from the May 2013 Springs Fire burn area.
In addition to the rock removal effort, a contractor was hired to remove mud and debris, re-position displaced K-rails and repair highway shoulders that were damaged or washed out.
The 9-mile stretch of the highway is expected to remain closed until the end of January.
