Burbank police open fire on suspected van thief

Burbank police opened fire on a suspected van thief early Saturday, according to the department. 

The shooting happened at around 1 a.m. near Buena Vista Street and Vanowen Street, according to a statement from the Burbank Police Department. 

Officers on patrol in the area spotted the vehicle and confirmed that it was stolen before they conducted a "high-risk traffic stop" the statement said. 

"During the traffic stop, an officer-involved shooting occurred," according to BPD. 

The driver of the van, a white Ford Econoline, was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment on minor injuries. No officers were injured, the statement said. 

According to department officials, the officer involved in the shooting has been placed on administrative leave as part of standard procedure. The shooting is being investigated internally and by the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office.
