2 Brothers Killed In Moreno Valley Shooting; Killer At Large
MORENO VALLEY (CBSLA) — Two brothers are dead Thursday after a shooting outside a Jack in the Box restaurant in Moreno Valley.
Gunshots were reported after 8 p.m. at the Lakeshore Villa Shopping Center at Sunnymede Ranch and Old Lake Drive. When deputies arrived, they found the brothers lying on the ground.
People who had been in the area at the time of the shooting said they heard as many as six to seven shots.
The killer is still at-large.
A woman who would only identify herself as Pat said she was at the shopping center with her daughter to get gas.
"Oh, I got chills. Something happens so quick, you don't know which way to turn, you don't know if it will be your last breath," she said.
A silver Nissan sedan, with its windows covered with white sheeting, was towed away early Thursday, but it was not clear what connection it had to the shooting.
The coroner's office responded to the scene.
CBS2's Dave Lopez spoke to friends of the brothers. One of the siblings was a 17-year-old friends said was nicknamed Lil JJ. Friends identified him as Jeremiah Ascencio.
His brother was identified as 19-year-old Eli Ascencio.
Both had attended Canyon Springs High School, about a block from the murder scene. Jeremiah had recently left the school and was being home schooled. Eli graduated two years ago, friends said.
Police told Lopez they had very little to go on but they were pouring over videos from the Jack in the Box as well as a Shell station across the way.
Friends said the two brothers were not in gangs. One friend told Lopez, "They never hurt anybody."
There was no information available about suspects, but Shell employees said they saw two men running away after the shooting.
